I have been training jiujitsu for about 7-8 years now and been taking personal instruction with Josh for about 5 years or so. I have been religiously training with him in private settings every week for all that time so that certainly speaks for the quality of teaching I get. I would not be anywhere close to where I am in the art right now without his undivided attention and very detailed lessons, filled up with useful tips. Josh is one of the most patient teachers I know. He knows how to identify your weaknesses and work on them with only one goal in mind, which is improvement. He takes the time to get to know each and everyone of his students to adjust his teaching methods to their needs and to the way that they will learn the best. He provides feedback always in a positive way, even when some tricks and skills prove to be difficult to acquire by the student. He knows how to get the best out of us without being pushy or stressing us out, which is a rare quality for teachers, regardless the field. He is also super knowledgeable at what he does, and always has a very detailed answer to any question I may have. All that while keeping the class or private lesson up-beat, friendly and jovial. His attitude towards teaching and his great sense of humor, together with his 'out-of-the-ordinary' mnemonics, make for some of the best learning environments I have ever witnessed. Being an educator myself, I have applied some of Josh's techniques with my own trainees. THAT is how GOOD he is!

I was lucky enough to meet Josh Vogel just a few months after I started training. A friend told me " This is the guy you want to learn from!" Since then, I've been doing private lessons at least once a week with him. I didn't realize how much knowledge Josh had in the beginning because I knew nothing about BJJ at that point. It's been 5 years since my first lesson at Balance and I can't imagine where I'd be without Josh. He is always on time, always ready to teach, and constantly improving my technique. He doesn't just teach, he genuinely cares if you learn. Even after a class or at night, he's just a text or email away to answer any questions I may have about something we worked on. And now, with The Sloth Report, some of my questions are answered before I even ask them. I think this high level of instruction and technique comes from the very short lineage that can easily be traced from The Gracie family, to the Migliarese brothers, then to Josh Vogel.
The biggest and best compliment I get about my jiu jitsu happens after training with someone and they say " I really can tell that you've been training with Josh!!!"
